On October 19th, the builders and designers of the next generation gathered in Haarlem for Archikidz! This year, Benthem Crouwel Architects served as one of the event’s main sponsors. Our senior architect and sustainability expert, Alina Zaytseva, inspired young participants to explore sustainable and playful design.

Archikidz aims to introduce children to architecture in a fun and engaging way, encouraging them to think about the future. These ideas play a valuable role in shaping our cities as sustainable living spaces. The workshop is open to all children, regardless of their background. Benthem Crouwel Architects, sharing in Archikidz’s mission, believes it is important to introduce children to these questions early, and is dedicated to passing on the values of design that respects both nature and future generations. We view participating in Archikidz and passing on our knowledge as essential elements of social sustainability, nurturing a new generation that values thoughtful design.

Children aged 8-12 were invited to create their own dream neighborhood, and the excitement was palpable among the 140 participants as the day began. First, they sketched out their ideas— what should their ideal neighborhood include? Once the sketches were complete, it was time to bring these visions to life. A team of 30 architects, including a group from Benthem Crouwel Architects, guided the children in selecting materials and constructing their designs into miniature models.

By the end of the day, all their unique ideas came together to form one collaborative neighborhood. The result? A vibrant space with multiple pools, castles, playgrounds, and even a North Pole, complete with a polar bear! All creations were carefully reviewed by a jury, and three proud winners were selected.

We’re already excited for the next edition in 2025!
