The municipality of Venlo has granted planning permission for the Maaswaard elderly housing project. Sited along the River Maas, this complex of sheltered housing for the elderly offers a wide array of living arrangements (group living, extra care apartments, independent apartments for rent), social and health services, and shops and amenities. This is in response to the increasing demand among today's elderly for assisted or independent living combined with high-grade care and other facilities. The design, a four-storey base building from which rise towers of a further three to seven storeys, locks into the surroundings and the public park. The whole sits atop an underground parking facility. Construction of the complex is to begin in April 2009 with completion scheduled for 2011.
